Data Centre CRAC & Chilled Water Replacement
A phased critical-cooling replacement programme delivered within a fully operational London colocation data centre, replacing 13 DX CRAC systems, 26 associated rooftop condenser circuits and 5 chilled-water units across four live data halls while maintaining cooling resilience throughout the works.
Challenge
The client required ageing critical cooling equipment to be replaced across four occupied data halls without compromising resilience to the live server environment. Site access was extremely restricted, and the works had to be planned around a fully operational building, including rooftop lifting operations and the movement of replacement plant through the building via the passenger lift.
Solution
Emtec Climate Solutions delivered the replacement programme in carefully controlled phases. The works included decommissioning, refrigerant recovery and replacement of 13 DX CRAC systems, installation of 26 associated rooftop condensers/circuits via a planned crane lift, and replacement of 5 chilled-water units with new Stulz ASD 940CW equipment. Refrigerant and chilled-water pipework was modified as required, with new condensate pumps and leak detection installed. Emtec also completed a controlled live connection into the existing chilled-water system, allowing the new cooling equipment to be integrated without shutting down the existing system. Systems were pressure tested, evacuated, charged and prepared for final manufacturer commissioning.
Result
The multi-system critical cooling replacement was delivered through a controlled phased programme across four operational data halls. Cooling resilience was maintained throughout the works, including during the live chilled-water modification, and the new DX and chilled-water equipment was integrated into the existing critical cooling infrastructure without requiring a shutdown of the existing chilled-water system.
