Hospital, AHU 18 Refurbishment
An in-situ refurbishment of a critical supply and extract air handling unit at a North West hospital, combining complex access and lifting, mechanical upgrades, fan and DX replacement, and full system verification in a live healthcare environment.
Challenge
AHU 18 was too large to remove from the plantroom as a complete unit, so the refurbishment had to be delivered in-situ. The works combined restricted access, heavy component handling and an existing membrane roof, with airside modifications and live building services carried out in a critical healthcare environment.
Solution
Emtec coordinated the enabling and mechanical works for the full supply and extract AHU upgrade. This included a dedicated access and crane-lifting strategy, relocation of fire, electrical and steam/condensate services, new fresh-air ductwork and a frost coil section, replacement of the existing belt-driven supply and extract fans with direct-drive plug fans, and a DX heating and cooling upgrade using four Mitsubishi Heavy systems. The works were completed alongside the incumbent BMS and controls provider before the AHU was re-energised, set to work and verified.
Result
AHU 18 was returned to full operation with new plug fans, DX systems and frost coil modifications. Supply and extract fan speeds were set to achieve the required airflow volumes, and a full system verification was completed in line with HTM 03-01.
